Statement from the Council of Faiths on the Death of Councillor Shanika Mahendran
It is with profound sadness that the Council of Faiths marks the passing of Councillor Shanika Mahendran. On behalf of our faith communities, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched through her public service.
Councillor Mahendran was known for her commitment to bringing people together across different backgrounds and beliefs. As a Milton Keynes councillor and Cabinet Member for Planning, she demonstrated a strong dedication to inclusion, community engagement, and ensuring that all voices were heard.
The Council of Faiths will particularly remember and value her support for interfaith dialogue and understanding. Her efforts to help establish and promote Interfaith Week in the Council Chambers created meaningful opportunities for people of different faiths and beliefs to meet, learn from one another, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our community. Her encouragement and support helped foster relationships built on mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation.
Shanika understood that our differences should never divide us but instead enrich the shared life of our city. Her willingness to engage with faith communities and champion initiatives that brought people together will remain an important part of her legacy.
At this time of loss, we give thanks for her service, her vision, and her friendship. May her memory continue to inspire us to build the inclusive, compassionate, and united community that she worked so hard to promote.
