Houses in Multiple Occupation (HiMOs)

Also at the November meeting the issue of Houses in Multiple Occupation was discussed.

What is a HiMO?

It is a property occupied by a group of people who are not all members of the same family, living in the same building, who form more than one household.

In Milton Keynes the Council is aware of approximately 600 HiMOs.

All of these have been inspected. Not all HiMOs require a licence.

Mandatory licensing applies to properties which are:-

• • 3 or more stories

  • Are occupied by 5 or more people.

    •  

    • Approximately 205 have been licensed in Milton Keynes.

    •  

    • They need planning permission, change of use from ‘residential’ to ‘HiMO’.
