Poverty in Milton Keynes

At a recent meeting of the Council of Faiths officers from Milton Keynes Council gave a presentation about ‘poverty in Milton Keynes’ and answered questions.

There are 16 estates in Milton Keynes where a third or more of the population are classified as being within the 25% most deprived nationally. The following estates are within the 15% most deprived nationally; Beanhill, Netherfield, Tinkers Bridge, Fullers Slade, Water Easton (Lakes), Conniburrow and Bradville.

From a religious point of view the Muslim community is the poorest.

Those in council housing tend to be poor. Housed from homeless list. Due to shortage of council housing the council is now placing tenants in private rental accommodation.

The introduction of the “Bedroom Tax” has increased rent arrears, and those on low incomes who used to pay no council tax now pay 20% council tax in Milton Keynes.

Where do the figures come from? Various sources, but mostly from the Office of National Statistics.

Milton Keynes is an affluent city with 2.3 people per job.

Homeless people, eg due to rent arrears or relationship breakdown.

The council is being more holistic, eg helping with employment.

Need skills – numeracy, literacy and IT skills.

How can the Council of Faiths help?

Winter Night Shelter: There is a Winter Night Shelter in MK for homeless people for the three months of December/January/February. Email wnsmiltonkeynes@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer.
